How the Two Sigma process differs by track
Two Sigma runs separate loops for different roles. Here is the path each track reports, in order:
- Quant Researcher / Modeling (6 stages): Online Assessment → Technical Round 1 → Technical Round 2 → Technical Round 3 → Hiring Manager Rounds → Final
Candidates also report one or two phone screens between the online assessment and the onsite. The number of hiring-manager rounds varies by team. - Software Engineer / Quant Developer: Takes the shorter engineering version of the online assessment (two problems in about 75 minutes, per QuantVault reports). Later rounds are coding-led; outside guides mention system design, but public reports on this loop are thinner.

Every Two Sigma round: what it tests and how to prepare
1Online Assessment
Track-split HackerRank screen. QR / Data Science: about three problems over a long window (~3 h), heavy on data wrangling and statistical reasoning. SWE: two algorithmic problems in about 75 minutes. Auto-graded: correctness gates progress to the recruiter call.
Question types: mostly coding, especially complexity analysis, data structures, sorting and searching and graph algorithms. Latest candidate report for this round: Jun 2026.
How to prepare
- The data-science part is usually pandas-flavored — clean the data, compute a statistic, return a number. Don't overthink runtime.
- The algorithmic part is medium difficulty. Aim for one passing solution + one optimization pass; clean code matters more than golf.
Two Sigma online assessment guide →Practice this round (24 questions) →
2Technical Round 1: Open-ended Data Science
The exploratory round. Expect open-ended discussion across regression, ML basics, and time-series intuition.
- Often framed as an open prediction problem: define the target, choose features and models, then explain how you would validate it.
Question types: mostly machine learning, statistics and time series, especially variance, regression, cross validation and feature engineering. Latest candidate report for this round: Jun 2026.
How to prepare
- Think out loud. The right answer matters less than showing structured exploration.
Full Technical Round 1 guide →Practice this round (55 questions) →
3Technical Round 2: Coding
Medium-hard algorithmic problem. Not LeetCode-hard, but they want clean code, correct edge-case handling, and one optimization conversation after the first working solution.
- Code while narrating your reasoning.
Question types: mostly coding, optimization and combinatorics, especially complexity analysis, data structures, sorting and searching and two pointers and sliding windows. Latest candidate report for this round: Jun 2026.
How to prepare
- Write the brute-force first, then optimize. Talking through complexity wins points.
- They care about readability — name your variables like a teammate would read them in a code review tomorrow.
Full Technical Round 2 guide →Practice this round (91 questions) →
4Technical Round 3: Stats & Math
Two Sigma's signature round, heavy on regression theory: derive the OLS estimator, set up a maximum-likelihood problem, walk through bias and variance, compare OLS with weighted least squares, and reason about asymmetries such as regressing Y on X versus X on Y and omitted-variable bias. Expect follow-ups that change an assumption and ask what breaks.
Question types: mostly expectation, regression and statistics, especially expected value, variance, conditional probability and independence. Latest candidate report for this round: Jun 2026.
How to prepare
- Re-derive OLS β̂ on a napkin until reflexive. Same for $\text{Var}(\hat\beta) = \sigma^2 (X^\top X)^{-1}$.
- Know the asymmetry. OLS slope of $Y$ on $X$ is $\hat\beta_{Y\sim X} = \text{Cov}(X,Y)/\text{Var}(X)$; slope of $X$ on $Y$ is $\text{Cov}(X,Y)/\text{Var}(Y)$. Their product equals $R^2$.
- Three core MLE setups they reuse: Bernoulli, Normal-mean known-variance, and Uniform. If those are reflex, Pareto-MLE / AR(1)-MLE / GBM-MLE follow the same pattern.

5Hiring Manager Rounds: 3 rounds, topic depends on the team
Three sequential hiring manager rounds, each with the hiring manager of a different team. Topic depends entirely on that team: research teams probe past projects, execution teams ask microstructure, alpha-blending teams ask about signal correlation. One round usually skews behavioral. You can't pre-study by domain; what you CAN do is rehearse a reasoning framework that holds up under unfamiliar setups.
- Candidate-reported and team-dependent. One outside guide describes hiring-manager conversations in the afternoon of the final day rather than as separate rounds.
Question types: mostly market microstructure, optimization and game theory, especially expected value, convex optimization, conditional probability and portfolio theory. Latest candidate report for this round: Jun 2026.
How to prepare
- Bring a tight 5–6 slide deck on a past research project. Lead with the result, then the method, then the limitations. The MD does not care about your full pipeline — they care that you can defend your choices and acknowledge what would change your conclusion.
- Have three behavioral stories rehearsed. (1) A collaboration that was hard but worked. (2) A research finding that turned out to be wrong, and what you did after. (3) A time you changed your mind based on data. These will fit ~80% of behavioral prompts at any senior round.
- Frame the problem out loud in the first 30 seconds. Restate what you understood, name your assumptions, sketch the approach you'll take. This costs you nothing and gives the interviewer a chance to redirect if you misread the question — far better than catching it 15 minutes in.
Full Hiring Manager Rounds guide →Practice this round (43 questions) →
6Final: Senior MD / VP
A senior MD or VP, almost all behavior and fit: do they want to work with you for years? No specific skill test.
How to prepare
- Have your own 'why this team' answer pre-written — don't improvise. Two Sigma's research-collaborative culture is a real differentiator vs. Citadel's pod model; if you can articulate why that matters to you specifically, that lands.
- Warm up open-ended questions with AI in voice mode. Pick 3–5 prompts from the practice set, then read them out loud to Claude/GPT/etc. in voice mode. Talk through your answer for 90 seconds without rehearsing. The act of speaking the framework — not just thinking it — is what calibrates pace and surfaces gaps you'd otherwise miss until interview day.

A 4-week Two Sigma prep plan
Built from the order of Two Sigma's rounds and the topics in each round's practice set. Compress it if your first interview is sooner.
| When | Focus | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Foundations | Review coding, regression and expectation, the topics that dominate Two Sigma's practice sets. Start with Quant coding course and Statistics & regression course. Work the easy and medium questions in the Two Sigma question set. |
| Week 2 | Early rounds: Online Assessment, Technical Round 1, Technical Round 2 and Technical Round 3 | Practice coding, regression and statistics under time pressure, and read the OA guide. Talk every answer through out loud; interviewers score the reasoning. |
| Week 3 | Later rounds: Hiring Manager Rounds and Final | Move to market microstructure, optimization and options pricing. Read how quant superdays work. |
| Week 4 | Rehearse the full loop | Run each practice round in order, redo the questions you missed, and prepare two project stories plus a specific answer to "why Two Sigma?" (see behavioral questions at trading firms). |
Two Sigma pay
| Role | Level | Total comp | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quant Researcher | PhD, first year | $600k – $700k | Top of grad-hire market. Sign-on often material on top. |
| Quant Researcher | Master's / experienced grad | $350k – $500k | Same role family, less leverage at offer time. |
| Modeling Associate | PhD, first year | $400k – $550k | Adjacent to QR but more applied / less open research. |
| Quant Developer | New grad (BS/MS) | $300k – $450k | Engineering ladder. Year-2+ ramps fast if you ship. |
| Quant Developer | Mid (3–5 yrs) | $450k – $650k | Senior eng work; non-trivial scope expected. |
Total compensation means base salary plus bonus and any sign-on, as candidates self-report it. Job postings usually show base salary only, so posted figures and outside salary pages often look lower. These are rough ranges, NOT offers or guarantees. Real numbers vary by year, group, performance, and candidate leverage. Treat as a sanity-check, not a target. Two Sigma teams and what their interviews test
Two Sigma's quant org is a research pipeline: raw data → predictive signals → portfolio construction → execution. QR hires usually land in the first two pillars; engineers spread across all four.
| Pillars | What it does | What its interviews test |
|---|---|---|
| Alpha Research Quant Researcher | Discover predictive signals from data — alternative data, fundamentals, microstructure, time series. | Regression theory, MLE, hypothesis testing, ML fundamentals (bias-variance, regularization). |
| Signal Generation QR / Modeling Associate | Turn raw signals into trade-ready forecasts. Cross-validate, decay-correct, combine with other signals. | Conditional expectation, signal decay, multi-signal combination math, basic backtest intuition. |
| Portfolio Optimization Quant Researcher / Modeling Assoc | Mean-variance + risk constraints + transaction costs. Build the actual portfolio from the signals. | Convex optimization, linear algebra, Lagrange multipliers, risk model basics. Surfaces most in the senior-MD final round. |
| Execution / Infra Quant Developer / Engineer | Translate the optimized portfolio into orders. Latency, fill quality, market impact. | Clean Python/C++, system design, basic microstructure. Less probability theory, more code quality. Driven by the dedicated coding technical round. |

Founded 2001
Founded by David Siegel and John Overdeck, both ex-D. E. Shaw. Two Sigma scaled by leaning hard into data + ML at a time when most quant funds were still factor-driven. The 'research-first' culture comes directly from that lineage.
Co-founder transition (2023–2024)
Siegel and Overdeck had a publicized governance dispute. Both stepped back from day-to-day operations; the firm is now run by a CEO team. Doesn't materially affect the interview, but candidates sometimes get asked about it in informal conversation — be aware, don't speculate.
What candidates hear about the strategies
Per publicly reported coverage it depends on the book: the MACRO book (the Compass family) has had real down years, while the EQUITY book has been steadier and is widely reported not to have had a single down year. Useful context only: don't quote specific numbers in interviews unless you've read a recent letter/article and can cite it. Interviewers want to see you reason, not parrot rumors.
Tech stack
Python is the lingua franca for research. Candidates report C++ in production systems and a research platform built around Jupyter and custom Python.
Culture
Research-first, collaborative within pillars; teams share data + infra but own their alpha
What the interviews feel like
Candidates report a long loop: OA, one or two phone screens, three technical rounds, hiring manager rounds (often three, varying by team) and a senior MD/VP closer. Multiple rounds probe the same problem from different angles. They want to see how you reason, not just whether you got the right answer.
