Every Goldman Sachs round: what it tests and how to prepare

1HackerRank Online Assessment

52 min · 2 timed sections · HackerRank, proctored (candidate-reported, 2026 sitting)12 practice questions

A candidate for the 2027 Engineering New Analyst Program in Asia Pacific reports a proctored HackerRank test in two timed sections.

  • Software Fundamentals, 30 minutes: one data structures and algorithms problem. In 2026 it asked you to split an array into three non-empty groups and pick one element from each so that |a1 - a2| + |a2 - a3| is as small as possible.
  • Math, 22 minutes: 8 multiple-choice questions on calculus, linear algebra and probability. Reported items: a two-car flat-tire probability, the largest possible covariance given two variances, normalizing a piecewise density, an arc length, the area between two sine curves, a Lagrange multiplier on the unit circle, what AB = I implies, and which diagonalization statements hold.

The invite reportedly allowed AI tools inside the HackerRank environment. Warm up: linear algebra, probability, coding questions.

Question types: mostly brain teasers, linear algebra and coding, especially numerical methods, matrix operations, eigenvalues and sorting and searching. Latest candidate report for this round: Sep 2026.

How to prepare

  • The math section is about 2.5 minutes per question. Every item is a standard first-year result; recognize the tool and move on.
  • Square matrices only. AB = I forces BA = I for square matrices; for rectangular ones it does not, and option lists test that distinction.
  • Look for the reduction before you code. Group-and-pick problems often collapse to a simpler question about the values themselves; prove it, then the code is short.

2Live Interviews / Superday

Live interviews after the OA (format varies by division and region; not yet verified for 2027)12 practice questions

We do not yet hold a verified 2027-cycle report of these live rounds. Public guides describe technical interviews with engineers (data structures, algorithms, a coding exercise) plus motivation and fit questions. See also Goldman Sachs interview questions.

Question types: mostly brain teasers, coding and combinatorics, especially symmetry, conditional probability, data structures and eigenvalues. Latest candidate report for this round: Sep 2026.

How to prepare

  • Expect to code live. Engineering interviews usually ask for a working solution and its complexity, so practice explaining while you type.
  • Keep probability warm. Earlier Goldman Sachs reports in our bank lean on expected value and probability puzzles.
  • Report what you get. This stage will be rebuilt from the first verified 2027 report.

A 4-week Goldman Sachs prep plan

Built from the order of Goldman Sachs's rounds and the topics in each round's practice set. Compress it if your first interview is sooner.

WhenFocusWhat to do
Week 1FoundationsReview brain teasers, linear algebra and coding, the topics that dominate Goldman Sachs's practice sets. Start with Probability course and Linear algebra course. Work the easy and medium questions in the Goldman Sachs question set.
Week 2Early rounds: HackerRank Online AssessmentPractice brain teasers, linear algebra and coding under time pressure, and read the OA guide. Talk every answer through out loud; interviewers score the reasoning.
Week 3Later rounds: Live Interviews / SuperdayMove to coding, combinatorics and expectation. Do timed coding sessions in your interview language. Read how quant superdays work.
Week 4Rehearse the full loopRun each practice round in order, redo the questions you missed, and prepare two project stories plus a specific answer to "why Goldman Sachs?" (see behavioral questions at trading firms).
