Every Virtu Financial round: what it tests and how to prepare

1Online Assessment

75 min · 5 problems · Codility / HackerRank12 practice questions

The frozen coding bank that's gated candidates for years: minimum ±1 steps to the nearest Fibonacci number, max apples into a 5000g box (greedy after sort), HexSpeak validation, student-score stabilization, and counting identical-character substrings. A 2025 variant swaps in finance-flavored tasks (ETF fair value, most-profitable trade, a pandas school-count).

Question types: mostly coding, especially greedy, sorting and searching, dynamic programming and two pointers and sliding windows. Latest candidate report for this round: Oct 2025.

How to prepare

  • Greedy-after-sort solves the apples problem; the substring count is per-run n(n+1)/2.
  • For the 2025 variant, brush up on ETF fair-value math and basic pandas group-counts.

2HR / Behavioral Screen

20–30 min · phone10 practice questions

Self-intro, 'why quant / why Virtu', and behavioral prompts (negative feedback, teamwork, conflict), then almost always 1-3 easy brain teasers at the end (clock angle, bridge crossing, dice expectation).

  • A 20 to 30 minute recruiter call: why Virtu, a walk through your CV, stories about pressure, and a few easy brainteasers.

Question types: mostly brain teasers, optimization and probability, especially relative motion, backtracking, combinatorics and conditional probability. Latest candidate report for this round: Aug 2024.

How to prepare

  • Have the easy teasers reflexive: clock angle, bridge-crossing min time, cube-weight scaling, dice-with-rerolls EV.
  • Keep BQ answers tight (STAR) — but the teasers are what actually cut people.
  • Be ready for 'why Virtu' with something specific about a public-market HFT.

3Technical Phone

~1 hr each · video42 practice questions

Resume/research deep-dive plus probability, expectation, and statistics: the coin tails-then-heads game, frog jumps until the sum exceeds 1, the handshake-grid expectation, P(≥60 heads in 100) via CLT, dependent-but-uncorrelated constructions. Quant strategists also get one coding round.

Question types: mostly coding, probability and expectation, especially discrete probability, expected value, dynamic programming and binomial distribution. Latest candidate report for this round: Nov 2025.

How to prepare

  • Probability/expectation core: the tails-then-heads finiteness product, frog-jumps E = e, handshake-grid linearity, and CLT tail bounds.
  • Statistics follow-ups: construct dependent-but-uncorrelated RVs, regression assumptions, A/B sample size.
  • Quant-dev: be ready to implement a clean Connect Four / spiral matrix on the spot.

4Onsite / Superday

Back-to-back rounds · opens with an IQ test13 practice questions

Opens with a ~30-60 min IQ/logic test (50-60 figure-pattern and number-sequence questions, some GRE vocab and mental math), then resume + mixed probability/combinatorics/brain-teaser rounds, and a final modeling-heavy round with a team lead / regional head (a common rejection point). Traders may also get an arithmetic/mental-math test.

  • A full day with senior traders and team leads that includes an IQ-style logic test, multi-step probability and behavioural questions.

Question types: mostly probability, brain teasers and combinatorics, especially game theory, symmetry, discrete probability and expected value. Latest candidate report for this round: Jul 2025.

How to prepare

  • Warm up on figure-pattern + number-sequence puzzles (MathCounts/AMC level) for the IQ test.
  • Onsite probability classics: 25 horses, two chords cross, 100 sharks survivors, the drunkard's escape walk.
  • The modeling final is where people get cut — structure an open-ended modeling answer (baseline → assumptions → refinement).

5Final

Modeling-heavy13 practice questions

A final round with a team lead or regional head, modeling-heavy and a common rejection point. Expect open-ended reasoning plus fit.

Question types: mostly expectation, statistics and stochastic processes, especially expected value, Markov chains, random walk and estimation. Latest candidate report for this round: Nov 2024.

How to prepare

  • Structure open-ended modeling — baseline first, assumptions explicit, then refine.
  • Variance-reduction designs recur (measure A+B and A−B with a noisy ruler).
  • Show market awareness and genuine interest — it's a fit/judgment call at this level.

A 4-week Virtu Financial prep plan

Built from the order of Virtu Financial's rounds and the topics in each round's practice set. Compress it if your first interview is sooner.

WhenFocusWhat to do
Week 1FoundationsReview coding, probability and expectation, the topics that dominate Virtu Financial's practice sets. Start with Quant coding course and Probability course. Work the easy and medium questions in the Virtu Financial question set.
Week 2Early rounds: Online Assessment, HR / Behavioral Screen and Technical PhonePractice coding, probability and expectation under time pressure, and read the OA guide. Add a daily mental-math drill. Talk every answer through out loud; interviewers score the reasoning.
Week 3Later rounds: Onsite / Superday and FinalMove to expectation, brain teasers and statistics. Read how quant superdays work.
Week 4Rehearse the full loopRun each practice round in order, redo the questions you missed, and prepare two project stories plus a specific answer to "why Virtu Financial?" (see behavioral questions at trading firms).

Virtu Financial pay

RoleLevelTotal compNotes
Quant Trader / ResearcherNew grad$200k – $350kBrain-teaser/probability-gated trader & research roles; bonus-driven.
Software / Quant DevNew grad$170k – $280kEngineering comp; frozen-OA-gated, real coding in later rounds.

Total compensation means base salary plus bonus and any sign-on, as candidates self-report it. Job postings usually show base salary only, so posted figures and outside salary pages often look lower. Rough ranges, NOT offers. Virtu is publicly traded; comp is competitive for an HFT MM but typically below the top private prop shops. Virtu Financial teams and what their interviews test

The pipeline is nearly identical across tracks: OA → HR/behavioral → resume team-screen (gating) → 1-2 technical phone rounds → onsite/superday (with an IQ test) → final with a head. Traders/QR skew brain-teaser + probability; quant-dev/SWE add real LeetCode-style coding and system design.

Slow, disorganized recruiting

A recurring complaint: HR and the OA pass first, THEN the hiring team screens your resume, so strong candidates get 'white-screened' after two rounds. The process is slow and communication is spotty — budget time and don't read silence as a result.

Culture

A publicly-traded HFT market maker. Recruiting is reported as slow and disorganized — candidates often get 'white-screened' (HR/OA pass, then the team declines on resume). The technical bar is brain-teaser and probability speed, not heavy coding for traders.

What the interviews feel like

Green-book brain teasers + probability/expectation dominate, with an IQ/figure-pattern test at the onsite. Coding is light for traders, heavier for quant-dev/SWE (a frozen OA bank).
