Every Arrowstreet Capital round: what it tests and how to prepare

1Online Assessment: Quant Research Screen

HackerRank-style test - 11 numeric questions + econometrics MCQs, ~4 min per question6 practice questions

Verified timed replica: OA page.

Question types: mostly finance, probability and random variables, especially expected value, correlation and normal distribution. Latest candidate report for this round: Nov 2025.

How to prepare

  • Portfolio algebra first — mean and variance of a linear combination, then the ratio; the bond exposures in the captured factor-model question cancel exactly.
  • Smallest testable change wins — on the judgment MCQs the answer is the specification tweak that directly tests the supervisor's hypothesis (a quadratic term, a year dummy), not black-box ML.

2HackerRank CodePair: Live Coding Screen

Live HackerRank CodePair session - Python/pandas concept questions interleaved with two LeetCode easy/medium problems8 practice questions

Slicing (negative indices, out-of-range bounds, views vs copies, list/NumPy/pandas indexing); @staticmethod vs @classmethod (what each receives, instance/class calls, inheritance with cls). Pandas: merge (join types, keys, duplicated keys), groupby (agg/transform/apply), rolling (window semantics, min_periods, centered), resample (up/down-sampling, label, closed). The must-do set below rebuilds all of it on small frames with verified outputs, plus both coding problems on the judge.

  • Live Python and pandas on CodePair: slicing and views, groupby aggregate versus transform, merges with duplicate keys and rolling windows, plus a couple of easy to medium coding problems.

Question types: mostly coding, especially python, pandas, hash maps and string algorithms. Latest candidate report for this round: Nov 2025.

How to prepare

  • Run slices in your head -- normalise the negatives, clip the bounds, walk the step: a[-3:1:-1] should take five seconds. Know what copies (a list slice), what aliases and what is a view (a NumPy basic slice).
  • cls is bound at call time -- a classmethod called through a subclass builds the subclass; a staticmethod is a plain function in the class namespace, overridable but blind to who called it. Have a from_dict-style constructor example ready.
  • pandas answers are row counts and index alignment -- a merge on duplicated keys multiplies rows per key; agg returns one row per group while transform broadcasts back; dropping an agg result straight into a column gives all-NaN. Rehearse min_periods, center=True and closed/label on a six-row toy frame until the outputs are automatic.

3Superday Written Exam

Paper-based written exam opening the Boston superday - statistics and asset-pricing derivations by hand6 practice questions

Candidate-reported (pooled from four 2025-26 accounts): the onsite opens with a paper test of statistics and asset pricing, closed-form derivations not computation. The five must-do problems below are original worked versions, numbers verified.

Topics: mean-variance (tangency portfolio, capital market line). Risk parity / ERC (w_i (Sigma w)_i = w_j (Sigma w)_j, two-asset closed form, not inverse-vol unless correlations are equal). X on Y vs Y on X (slopes differ, product is R-squared). Autocorrelation (N_eff about N(1-rho)/(1+rho) for AR(1), t-stats, Bartlett / Newey-West). Log utility (certainty equivalent, growth-optimal sizing). Pricing a payoff under a given utility / SDF.

  • A written exam is part of the Boston superday.

Question types: mostly finance, optimization and regression, especially portfolio theory and correlation. Latest candidate report for this round: Nov 2025.

How to prepare

  • Derive, do not recall -- each reported item is a short derivation from a definition: Var(w'r) for portfolio risk, the slope formula r s_y / s_x for the two regressions, the double sum of rho^|s-t| for the autocorrelated mean, E[ln W] for the gamble. Write the definition first, then the algebra.
  • ERC algebra cold -- RC_i = w_i (Sigma w)_i sums to portfolio variance (Euler); two assets give w_1 sigma_1 = w_2 sigma_2 whatever the correlation; inverse-vol is ERC iff the correlation matrix has equal row sums, so it fails as soon as correlations differ.
  • Product of the two slopes is R-squared -- both lines pass through the mean point and coincide only when |r| = 1; explain why OLS is not symmetric (vertical versus horizontal residuals) before the interviewer asks.

4Superday Interview Loop

Back-to-back interviews with several researchers after the written exam, lunch in the middle4 practice questions

Candidate-reported: after the paper exam, back-to-back interviews with several people, lunch in the middle. Earlier accounts: regression-heavy technical talks (OLS assumptions, coefficients, omitted-variable bias, time-series basics), resume deep-dive, light coding, behavioural fit. Some report a recruiter call and video technical rounds between CodePair screen and superday, so ordering varies. Compensation chatter (high base, very small headcount) is unverified hearsay.

  • Up to about eight 30-minute interviews, one-to-one or two-to-one, with lunch.

Question types: mostly probability, regression and time series. Latest candidate report for this round: Nov 2025.

How to prepare

  • Your exam script is on the table -- expect an interviewer to pick the derivation you struggled with and push on it; re-derive it cleanly rather than defending a rushed answer.
  • Regression from first principles -- Gauss-Markov, what breaks under heteroskedasticity, autocorrelation and multicollinearity, and omitted-variable bias with the sign argued from the correlations.
  • One research story in depth -- a project you can take from data to signal to portfolio, including what you would do differently. This is an academic-leaning firm: depth beats breadth.

WhenFocusWhat to do
Week 1FoundationsReview coding, finance and probability, the topics that dominate Arrowstreet Capital's practice sets. Start with Quant coding course and Markets field guide course. Work the easy and medium questions in the Arrowstreet Capital question set.
Week 2Early rounds: Online Assessment and HackerRank CodePairPractice coding, finance and probability under time pressure, and take the free OA sample (format notes in the OA guide). Talk every answer through out loud; interviewers score the reasoning.
Week 3Later rounds: Superday Written Exam and Superday Interview LoopMove to regression, time series and probability. Do timed coding sessions in your interview language. Read how quant superdays work.
Week 4Rehearse the full loopRun each practice round in order, redo the questions you missed, and prepare two project stories plus a specific answer to "why Arrowstreet Capital?" (see behavioral questions at trading firms).
