Every Marshall Wace round: what it tests and how to prepare
1Initial Test
Candidates report, and MW's guides confirm, a timed technical exam first: 2 hours in person at a Pearson VUE test centre this cycle. Below: every bank problem candidates have tied to Marshall Wace.
Pearson's page: 18 questions, negative marking (+2 correct, -1 incorrect, 0 unanswered). MW's topics: probability, statistics, regression, algebra, matrices, optimization, algorithm design. Earlier internship cycles: three online tests; some Glassdoor reviewers describe a longer maths test plus Codility and a data test. Reports vary.
Question types: mostly probability and finance, especially combinatorics, discrete probability, independence and number theory. Latest candidate report for this round: Jun 2026.
How to prepare
- Negative marking changes strategy. Pearson's page lists +2 / -1 / 0, so leave a question blank rather than guess blind.
- Breadth over depth. MW's topic list spans probability, statistics, regression, algebra, matrices, optimization and algorithm complexity (a published past sample asks for quicksort's average complexity).
- Treat it as confidential. You sign an NDA and MW says sharing test content ends the application; prep from MW's public samples.
2Human Capital Screening Call
After the test, candidates report a short Zoom call with a member of MW's Human Capital team. MW's Quant Associate guide lists 15 minutes and the internship guide 30 minutes. Per the guides it covers motivation (why this role and how it fits your goals), competency questions about past experiences mapped to MW's values, and time for your own questions.
How to prepare
- Know why MW specifically - a systematic and fundamental long/short equity manager, and what the TOPS platform is.
- Map stories to their values - have concrete examples ready for the competency questions.
- Ask real questions - MW frames the call as two-way.

3Lab Interview: Data Exercise
First quant-led technical round (Quant Associate), assessing how you work with data, logical reasoning and clear explanation.
MW's current guide: one hour. Others report two hours: a 60-minute Data Lab in a virtual machine, then an hour on Zoom presenting answers and a signal-construction case.
Question types: mostly finance. Latest candidate report for this round: Jun 2026.
How to prepare
- Be fast with data tooling - load, clean, group and plot a large dataset in your tool of choice without looking up syntax.
- Narrate as you go - the guide says explanation is graded alongside the analysis.
- Sanity-check everything - duplicates, missing values, outliers and look-ahead before trusting a result.

4Technical Project Presentation
Both MW guides include a ~15 to 20 minute presentation of a past technical project you choose, then questions probing any part for depth. Internship: 60-minute Zoom after the HR call. Quant Associate: at the assessment day with no devices, so bring a printout or send key material at least 3 working days ahead.
- Interns present on Zoom after the human capital call; associates present at the assessment day without devices.
How to prepare
- Pick the project you know deepest - expect probing on any design choice, not just the headline result.
- Cover the full arc - where the idea came from, what you did, how it worked.
- Keep to 15-20 minutes - leave the rest of the hour for questions.

6Assessment Day Case Study + Programming
Associate assessment-day morning, per MW's guide. Case study: Quant Researchers build a trading signal with the interviewer, discussing forecasting models and challenges (predictive, quantitative-finance, statistical modelling); Quant Implementation candidates do a system-design case (structure, data handling, component interfaces, performance, trade-offs). Programming: review written code and answer core-principles questions; past example: minimum-cost staircase dynamic programming. Little more case detail exists.
Question types: mostly finance. Latest candidate report for this round: Jun 2026.
How to prepare
- QR: have a signal workflow ready - target definition, features, out-of-sample validation, overfitting and costs.
- QI: break the system down - components, data flow, interfaces, bottlenecks and failure modes.
- Read code carefully - explain what it does, where it breaks and how you would improve it.
Full Assessment Day Case Study + Programming guide →Practice this round (1 question) →
7Final: Management Interviews + Shadowing
Strong candidates meet managers informally two or three at a time per MW's guides (team structure, management style, fit), and shadow a quant: same afternoon for associates, maybe individually arranged for interns. Some Glassdoor reviewers describe an assessment day of up to six interviews; reviews are mixed. Offers aimed within two weeks, via a Human Capital Zoom on team allocation.
How to prepare
- Research the teams - managers are assessing fit for their own team.
- Use the shadowing - ask about day-to-day research and tooling; it doubles as your read on the role.
- Bring questions on team structure and management style - MW frames this as a two-way introduction.

A 4-week Marshall Wace prep plan
Built from the order of Marshall Wace's rounds and the topics in each round's practice set. Compress it if your first interview is sooner.
| When | Focus | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Foundations | Review probability and finance, the topics that dominate Marshall Wace's practice sets. Start with Probability course and Markets field guide course. Work the easy and medium questions in the Marshall Wace question set. |
| Week 2 | Early rounds: Initial Test, Human Capital Screening Call and Lab Interview | Practice probability and finance under time pressure. Talk every answer through out loud; interviewers score the reasoning. |
| Week 3 | Later rounds: Technical Project Presentation, Assessment Day Brainteaser Interview, Assessment Day Case Study + Programming and Final | Move to probability and finance. Read how quant superdays work. |
| Week 4 | Rehearse the full loop | Run each practice round in order, redo the questions you missed, and prepare two project stories plus a specific answer to "why Marshall Wace?" (see behavioral questions at trading firms). |
Marshall Wace teams and what their interviews test
MW's graduate quant hiring runs through the Quant Associate Programme with a Quant Research track and a Quant Implementation (Quant Developer) track, plus a Quant Research Internship. The 2027 graduate board lists Quant Research (TOPS) and Quant Developer (TOPS) roles in London and New York. Tracks share the initial test and brainteasers; the assessment-day case study differs by track.
| Tracks | What it does | What its interviews test |
|---|---|---|
| Quant Researcher (Quant Associate) Quant Researcher | Signals and models for systematic strategies: investigation, hypothesis testing and validation, including backtesting forecasts of asset returns on hours-to-years horizons. | Initial test, HR screen, Lab interview (explore a dataset with a quant), then an assessment day: two brainteasers, a case study constructing a trading signal, a programming code review, a technical project presentation, and management meetings with shadowing. |
| Quant Developer (Quant Implementation) Quant Developer | Engineering production systems: high-performance, scalable solutions for systematic trading. | Same pipeline as research, but the assessment-day case is a system-design exercise: structuring a solution, handling data, interfaces between components, performance, failure points and trade-offs. No prior trading-systems experience is expected. |
| Quant Research Intern Quant Research Intern | Summer internship with mentors: developing models and algorithms, analysing large datasets for investment ideas, and presenting findings to the team. | Initial test, HR screen, a technical project presentation, then an onsite with a brainteaser interview, management meetings and shadowing. |
