How to prepare for the ETF & Trading-Knowledge Interview

  • Know the ETF-arbitrage / fair-value chain cold. Fair value = basket of underlyings; when the underlying is closed, proxy it with ADRs, correlated futures, or the last close adjusted by a correlated open market. Be explicit about basis risk.
  • Frame hedging as a regression. Hedge ratio = Cov(ETF, proxy)/Var(proxy); talk about hedge quality, residual risk, and why the ratio drifts.
  • Think like a market maker on the quote. Quote around fair value, widen with uncertainty and adverse selection, and skew your quote to manage inventory — a premium over fair value can be rational when you're short or expect one-sided flow.
  • Diagnose accumulating inventory as mispriced fair value or a stale hedge, and say how you'd correct the quote to bleed the position back to flat.
  • Reason aloud. This round is graded on markets understanding and structured thinking, not a single closed-form answer.
