How to prepare for the HireVue Video Interview
- Format, transcribed from a 2026 Quantitative sitting. 3 questions, one-way recording on HireVue. Each question shows a prep countdown of about 30 seconds (the screenshots caught it at 0:26, 0:28 and 0:29 mid-count), a maximum response time of 2 minutes, and exactly 1 retry. The instructions screen states that use of ChatGPT and other AI tools not expressly approved is strictly prohibited during the HireVue interview process. No score is shown. Candidate-reported.
- The three questions asked live in 2026 (Quantitative). 1. What is your top priority in deciding your next job? 2. Imagine that you had to present complex information to someone with limited knowledge of the subject. What steps would you take in order to help ensure your audience understood your presentation? 3. Tell me about a time when you detected a potential issue and developed a solution before it turned into a real problem. Describe the situation, the actions you took, and the outcome. Questions 2 and 3 reappear in the 2027 bank below as #29 and #2 with minor rewording, so the bank is predictive, not decorative.
- Reviewers tick three boxes - situation set up in one or two sentences, actions that are yours (not the team's), and an outcome with a number or a concrete result. An answer that stops at the action, or spends 45 seconds on context, reads as incomplete no matter how good the story is. Recordings are reviewed by JPM recruiting and hiring teams, not auto-scored on delivery.
- Aim for 75 to 100 seconds. The 2-minute cap cuts both ways: a 30-second answer looks unprepared, and a 2:00 answer gets truncated mid-sentence and the truncated take is what gets reviewed. Land the outcome by 1:15 and stop.
- Technical prompts are IB-flavored even for quant applicants. This bank is JPM-wide, not QR-specific: LBO rationale, LBO and DCF line items down to unlevered free cash flow, buying equipment through the three statements, surplus-cash strategies, equity-financed deals, beta with a low-beta and a high-beta example, valuing a laundromat. A QR applicant is more likely to draw the opener plus behavioral items (as in 2026), but the pool is shared, so have a 60-second version of each.
- 2027 bank - Opener (1). What attracts you to J.P. Morgan and specifically an opportunity in XX Division?
- 2027 bank - Situational (5). 26. Imagine a supervisor asked you to complete a task that requires expertise outside of your knowledge and experience. How would you approach completing that task? 27. Imagine you recently joined a team that has differing opinions on a project/task. How would you encourage collaboration to accomplish shared objectives? 28. Imagine that you are working as part of a team when you encounter an unexpected problem and the immediate solution is not obvious. What would you do in that scenario? 29. Imagine that you had to present complex information. How did you ensure your audience understood your presentation? 30. Imagine that you are in a new role and feeling overwhelmed by a deadline that is quickly approaching, what would you do in this situation?
- 2027 bank - Commercial awareness (6). 31. Discuss a recent headline in the financial markets that caught your attention and why? 32. Tell me about a recent news article you read related to the financial markets and why you found it relevant. 33. Describe what factors have influenced financial markets in recent months and how they might affect markets. 34. Describe what factors have influenced financial markets in recent months and how they might affect our clients. 35. What do you think are the greatest challenges the financial services industry will face in the next 5 years? 36. Please pitch us anything - a stock, a movie, an activity, a vacation location.
- 2027 bank - Technical, IB finance (12). 37. What is an LBO, and what is the rationale of it? 38. Without using numbers, identify and explain the key line items of an LBO model to get to free cash flow. 39. Without using numbers, identify and explain the key line items of a discounted cash flow model to get to unlevered free cash flow. 40. Discuss the potential impacts of acquiring equipment on a company's three financial statements. 41. What are the most effective ways for a company to demonstrate and realize value quickly after an acquisition? 42. Discuss the different strategies a company might consider when it has surplus cash, and explain the circumstances under which each strategy might be appropriate. 43. Discuss an acquisition where equity was used. What are the circumstances or market conditions that made using equity preferable? 44. How would you assess the feasibility and risks of a potential business initiative? 45. How would you approach advising a public company decision? 46. Share an experience where you identified a gap in a process and built a solution. 47. In the context of an investment, how would you define beta? Provide an example of a company that would have low beta, and another that would have high beta. 48. You've been asked to advise your local laundromat on a potential sale. How would you value the business? Note: #46 is behavioral in wording but sits in the technical block in the source; transcribed as listed.

Common mistakes
- 30 seconds of prep is retrieval time, not thinking time. Pre-build 6 stories that between them cover all 25 behavioral prompts: teamwork/collaboration (#1, #10, #12), initiative and going beyond (#3, #8, #18), a mistake or missed commitment plus feedback (#4, #13, #15), a communication fix (#5, #14, #17, #25), persistence against a deadline (#7, #9), and learning or explaining something hard (#20, #21, #24). Map every prompt to a story before the day so the countdown is spent choosing, not inventing.
- Use the single retry deliberately. One retry per question, and the retake replaces the first recording - you do not pick between them. Retake only if you lost the structure or ran over; a slightly rough but complete first take beats a rushed second one.
