Which Assessment Platform Each Quant Firm Uses (SHL, HackerRank, Codility, Criteria, Mettl)

A 42-firm table of OA platforms from our census and per-firm guides, what each platform's screen looks like, and which QuantVault replicas match it.

Every quant firm on QuantVault runs its first-round online assessment on some platform, and the platform shapes the experience as much as the questions do: an SHL screen asks you to drag and arrange, a HackerRank screen forces fullscreen and grades hidden tests, a Mettl screen lets you use a calculator, a Criteria CCAT gives you 18 seconds a question. This page pulls the platform for all 42 firms in our OA census into one table, built from the same candidate reports that feed the per-firm guides, then explains what each platform's screen looks like and which of our replicas match it. Where our reports do not name a platform, the table says so rather than guessing.

SHL: interactive cognitive items and the Values and Mindset questionnaire

What the screen looks like. Barclays' early-careers screen is the clearest capture: the instructions page says the test is activity-based rather than a set of response options, and the sitting runs 8 questions in 12 minutes in a Barclays-branded SHL shell. Items ask you to arrange a stacked bar chart or resize a pie chart from a short data panel, tap calendar dates or drag procedures onto a timeline for scheduling puzzles, and fill a figure sequence. IMC's cognitive assessment uses the same interactive style: tap-to-fill figure sequences on green and purple-dot grids, and drag-the-line node chains. The SHL Values and Mindset questionnaire that IMC and JPMorgan campus candidates report is untimed: 76 triads of first-person statements, pick the one most like you, then the better of the remaining two, so every item becomes a full ranking, with deliberate near-repeat items.

What it tends to test. The cognitive items are numerical and logical reasoning against a short clock, with the interaction itself (dragging the right bar to the right height) part of the task. The values questionnaire has no correct answers; what the platform measures is the shape and consistency of your profile. CTC's captured OA is described as an SHL-style reasoning battery: two short reading passages with true, false or cannot-say judgments and reading-comprehension MCQs, typically alongside numerical reasoning.

Replicas that match. Barclays SHL interactive cognitive test, IMC cognitive assessment (both item types, timed 12-item runs or untimed practice), IMC Values and Mindset, JPMorgan SHL Values and Mindset, and the CTC reasoning assessment.

HackerRank: auto-graded coding, and some math screens too

What the screen looks like. Akuna's 2027 quant coding challenge forces fullscreen and runs a multiple-monitor check, 3 Python questions in 120 minutes drawn from a shared 7-problem pool. JPMorgan's NAMR quant research OA is 2 sections with one Python question each, Python 2 and 3 only, solved as a single function against the HackerRank harness, and the 60-minute timer cannot be paused once started. Point72's Cubist QR OA is 5 Python questions with no external packages. Squarepoint's screen is multi-section and every part must pass. Tower Research's developer OA expects self-written input and output handling. Not every HackerRank sitting is coding: Jane Street's trader screen is described as written or HackerRank-hosted, about 4 probability questions in 30 minutes where you explain your reasoning, and IMC's 15-question trader test and 11-question researcher test are described as HackerRank-style, mixing multiple choice with numeric entry.

What it tends to test. Hidden test cases and time limits: Citadel draws 2 of about 40 problems in 70 minutes, Two Sigma runs 2 problems in 75 minutes for SWE and a frozen 3-problem data-science set in about 3 hours, HRT's algo developer OA is 3 problems in about 150 minutes from a small recycled canon, IMC's SWE test is 120 minutes with 2 hard problems where you optimize or time out, WorldQuant's data scientist OA is 4 performance-gated problems in 120 minutes with one in C++, and Millennium's quant developer battery is 6 questions in 3 hours. WorldQuant's software developer test adds a 4-item CS-fundamentals MCQ section next to its 2 coding problems.

Replicas that match. Akuna 2027 quant coding challenge, JPMorgan NAMR QR coding OA, Squarepoint screen, WorldQuant concepts section, Citadel datathon, IMC trader math test, IMC researcher test and Jane Street OA. The recurring coding problems for Citadel, Two Sigma, HRT, Point72, Millennium and Qube RT are auto-graded on each firm's guide page linked in the table.

Codility: long engineering sets

What the screen looks like. Jump Trading's main screen is a Codility C++ (or Python) set of 3 to 4 problems that candidates report taking anywhere from about 80 minutes to 4 hours, with long statements heavy on string parsing and simulation plus a couple of bit and greedy insight problems. Bridgewater's software engineering set runs 90 to 180 minutes with 4 to 5 problems headlined by the recurring "Computing the whole world" topological-sort problem. Old Mission's software track is a Codility set of about 2 hours mixing CS multiple choice with about 2 coding problems, often a recurring JSON-string parser. Our CTC OA guide records software engineering candidates reporting a Codility challenge of around three data-structures-and-algorithms problems at an easy-to-medium level. DRW's 150-minute, 3-problem SDE screen is described as Codility-style, with no hidden-test feedback while you work.

What it tends to test. Correctness on long, precisely specified problems rather than clever algorithms: parsing, simulation, stack machines, prefix sums, and edge cases you must find yourself because feedback is limited.

Practice that matches. The recurring problems are auto-graded on the Jump Trading, Bridgewater, Old Mission and DRW guide pages. Jump's separate SRE shell quiz has a timed replica.

CodeSignal: LeetCode-style sets and Optiver's simulations

What the screen looks like. D. E. Shaw's SDE screen is 4 problems in 90 minutes from a recurring bank, reported as harder than most peer OAs. AQR's coding OA is 3 problems in 75 to 90 minutes from a rotating bank of about 20, with a sparse-table range-query problem known as a time-limit trap. Optiver's software OA is one or two long object-oriented simulation problems built around a trading-flavored scenario, 75 to 90 minutes each, followed by a CS-knowledge MCQ of about 20 questions. HRT's SWE screen is often a CodeSignal "General" resume-screen auto-send at medium difficulty, Two Sigma used a proctored CodeSignal screen drawing 4 random problems for some 2021 intern cycles, and SIG's Strategy Developer track has a 4-problem CodeSignal test. Virtu's 5-problem trader, developer and SRE bank is described as CodeSignal-style; Aquatic Capital's engineering OA is reported as CodeSignal in Python.

What it tends to test. Classic algorithm problems where the last method and the corner cases are where candidates run out of time; at Optiver, implementing a small class with a handful of methods under a trading-flavored story.

Practice that matches. Auto-graded recurring problems on the D. E. Shaw, AQR, Optiver, Virtu and SIG pages, plus the AQR take-home math replica for the non-coding variant.

Criteria (CCAT): 50 questions in 15 minutes

What the screen looks like. A Criteria Cognitive Aptitude Test is 50 questions in 15 minutes, which is 18 seconds a question, across verbal, math and logic, and spatial items. Two firms on this site have CCAT-style replicas: Chicago Trading Company, whose trading candidates report a CCAT-style aptitude test, and Millennium, whose candidates report the Criteria CCAT as a screening step. Note that CTC's captured OA in our census is recorded as an SHL-style reasoning battery; both formats have replicas, so prepare for the one your invitation names.

What it tends to test. Pacing above everything: most candidates do not finish, so the skill is deciding in a few seconds whether an item is worth its 18 seconds. Verbal analogies and vocabulary, arithmetic and word problems, number series, and spatial rotation all appear.

Replicas that match. CTC aptitude test replica, Millennium Criteria assessment replica, and the firm-agnostic CCAT-style practice test, each 50 generated questions in 15 minutes with a per-section breakdown.

Mettl: the SIG quantitative screen

What the screen looks like. SIG is the one firm in the table on Mercer Mettl. The trader and quant researcher screen, the SIG Quantitative Evaluation, is 17 questions in 60 minutes with a calculator allowed, and the question bank has recurred since 2019 with only the numbers changing between sittings. The first roughly 9 questions are quick probability and expected-value calculations and the last 8 step up to gambler's ruin, constraint logic and a lattice-path DP. A full 2027-cycle sitting leaked in mid-2026 with 16 of 17 problems recovered: 13 were number rotations of the classic bank and 3 families were new (a two-dice payoff-matrix EV with a doubles penalty, a stars-and-bars count, and an expected-consecutive-pairs linearity question). An August 2026 candidate reported the live test closely matched our replica with no genuinely unseen problems.

What it tends to test. Speed on a known bank. Because the families are fixed, drilling them until the setup is automatic is the whole strategy; the calculator removes arithmetic as an excuse.

Replicas that match. The SIG practice page with 3 free questions, the 17-question timed replica, and the SIG Quantitative Assessment 2027 set covering the three new families.

Other platforms and proprietary screens

  • HireVue. Bank of America's campus round 1 is a HireVue battery of about 30 minutes in four modules: situational judgment, a business-case MCQ (the only module with right answers), a self-report questionnaire and 88 forced-choice personality pairs. JPMorgan candidates who clear the coding OA report a one-way HireVue with 3 questions, about 30 seconds of prep, a 2-minute maximum and one retry per answer. Replica: BofA business case.
  • EasyHire. Akuna's second quant researcher screen is a camera-proctored EasyHire sitting on pen and paper: about five calculus and linear-algebra items where you verbalize your reasoning before answering, then three timed probability brain-teasers. Replica: Akuna QR math OA.
  • Testlify. Wincent's quant test runs 12 numeric-entry questions in two sections (6 in 40 minutes, then 6 in 60 minutes) with random webcam snapshots, mandatory fullscreen and browser-extension detection; a simple calculator is allowed, you can skip but never revisit, and the test cannot be paused. Replica: Wincent quant test.
  • TestGorilla. XTX Markets' researcher screen is reported as TestGorilla or a take-home, varying by year, about 20 ML, statistics and probability questions with no way back to a passed question.
  • Caliper. Millennium's quant researcher interns take a Caliper personality assessment of about 180 items, forced-choice and abstract-reasoning, alongside the 24-hour Jupyter market-making project. It is not a coding or math test.
  • Honorlock proctoring. A candidate-reported July 2026 DRW sitting for the 2027 quant research intern cycle ran 6 fill-in questions in 45 minutes with an on-screen calculator and Honorlock webcam proctoring. Replica: DRW 2027 QR sitting.
  • Proprietary and unnamed screens. Five Rings runs its own timed screen with the camera on and no calculator, about 17 to 20 fill-in questions with a forced pause of about ten seconds before each (free replica). Optiver's Number Logic, Beat the Odds and Zap-N modules are in-browser with +1, -1 and 0 scoring (Number Logic, Beat the Odds). DTL sets a written proof paper. Old Mission's trader test is a fixed 35-question multiple-choice speed test in 25 minutes whose vendor our reports do not name (replica). Flow Traders' trading screen is described as an arithmetic sprint of about 8 minutes plus a sequences section of about 25 minutes with a wrong-answer penalty, vendor not named (free replica).

How to use the platform to prepare

Read your invitation email for the vendor name, find the row above, and practise in that format: interactive drag-and-arrange for SHL, fullscreen coding against hidden tests for HackerRank and Codility, a calculator at hand for Mettl, 18-second pacing for Criteria. Then work the firm's recurring question families on its guide page, because on most of these platforms the bank repeats: of the 20 firms where our census documents it, 18 reuse a stable or recurring bank year over year.

Frequently asked questions

Is the CTC Codility OA automated?

Our CTC OA guide records software engineering candidates reporting a Codility coding challenge with around three data-structures-and-algorithms problems, arrays and stacks among them, at an easy-to-medium level. Our reports do not describe how it is graded or whether a human reviews it, so treat it as a standard auto-graded coding screen and test your own edge cases. Quant Trading Analyst candidates do not get Codility: they report a timed reasoning battery (SHL-style verbal and numerical items in the captured sitting), and a CCAT-style aptitude replica is also on this site.

How long is the IMC SHL assessment?

IMC's SHL Values and Mindset questionnaire is untimed: 76 forced-choice triads where you pick the statement most like you and then the better of the remaining two. IMC's SHL-style cognitive assessment is timed; our replica runs timed 12-item sets of both item types (tap-to-fill figure sequences and drag-the-line node chains), and our reports do not give an official per-item clock. The math screens are separate: the 15-question trader test and 11-question researcher test are described as HackerRank-style, and our replicas allow 30 and 40 minutes for them.

Does Walleye Capital use HackerRank?

We have no candidate report of a Walleye Capital online assessment on HackerRank or any other platform, so Walleye is not in the table above. Is the WorldQuant test on HackerRank?

Yes for the software developer and data scientist tracks. The software developer hiring test pairs 2 coding problems with 4 single-answer CS-fundamentals MCQs (complexity, hash tables, heaps, sort stability); the data scientist OA is 4 performance-gated problems in 120 minutes, one of which must be in C++.
